Journal #20 - Pro/Con of Fireworks

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of New Years is the lightshow-fireworks. I remember popping fireworks with my family to celebrate the New Year since I was a baby. It is a tradition for many people in Hawaii.

We're lucky to be able to stand on our street and fill it up with ground blooms, sparklers, pop-pops, fountains, and other firecrackers. People in the mainland aren't allowed to do such thing. It would be heart wrenching and many people would be devistated or extremely mad if lighting up firecrackers were to be banned on our island.

Unfortunately, there are negative effects from the fireworks. As the clock approaches midnight, the sky fills with a thick cloud of smoke where I live. You can only see faint glows from the fireworks being lit up surrounding Kalihi. Its sad that some of my family members have to remain indoors due to their Asthma.

Along with this, fireworks cause fires and injuries from those who use them inappropriately. If fireworks were to be banned, we have no one to blame but ourselves. We need to stop taking advantage of our capabilities and start using fireworks responsibly.
